baby words, a boring post

Bodhi's first words were the same as Olivia's, but uttered at the zoo, rather than in the bath: 'Duck! Quack! Quack!'

He's been getting chattier the last two months, really, but he's aquiring quite a vocab now, and is almost progressing to putting words together. This is really so I can date it.

Current words:
Dog, dog's name, said interchangeably when he spots any dog, along with excited noises.
Vroom noises of varying degree for appliances/cars etc
Fish! on seeing fish tanks, and, er, fish.
Bath
Cheese!
Go! Go! playing running
Pop! for fruit pop
Bag
Shoos!
Car
Book

What's amazing to see is how the words suddenly start tumbling out. Initially they can sometimes say things completely clearly the first time (like when he got his Iggle Piggle toy last month, he said 'Iggle Piggle' clear as a bell, but never again. It's like it happens without them even realising, and then they think about it too hard.

Tonight we were reading a book, and when I pointed out the little bird in the picture, he pointed to it and said 'bup!'

The other night I was throwing him up in the air, and when I'd ask him if I should do it again, he'd shout 'do it, do it!'

Tonight I hung out of the cot getting up and it pulled away from the wall and banged back down, which he found v entertaining and said 'Bed Bang' indistinctly but impressively. Also made tickling gestures with his fingers, accompanied by 'tickle tickle' that comes out more of a noise, 'tidleeetidleee' sort of thing. Cuteness!

He's also been nodding emphatically when I ask him to clarify if he wants something for a while now, and says 'Yesss'. For example, when he wants a drink, he thumps my chest and says 'b'bmm b'bmm' (sorry B'dum, it does make me think of you). I say ohh, do you want some milk? and he'll nod with a big grin and say 'Yess'.

The other day he was in the hall with his dad, and he pointed over at the hat stand, patted his head, and pointed at the hat hanging up again. Very clear. I thought baby sign language was a bit much, a bit over the top, and kind of unnecessary anyway, but he makes himself so clear! I was a bit awed by that. He's Mr Communication.

Other less cheerful developmental news though, is that he's got terribly tantrummy in the last couple weeks, slappy and grumpy and throws himself to the floor at the least sign of a no, smashing his head back onto the hard surface. Sigh. Please god we haven't beaten down his sweet and amenable disposition already.

What a sweet post. Oh, to see things as simply as a baby does...

I'm always fascinated when my kids start saying words that I haven't taught them. You go from being able to list all of their words to suddenly not being able to and wondering where they learned half of them.

This is NOT a boring post. It's lovely. I love kids at that age, they're just so funny.

Don't worry about the tantrummy bit, Tinson1 did that for a while, they grow out of it.

Hi Sara, thanks - that's the funny thing, though, I'm NOT signing, he is! I didn't teach him anything! But it does suggest it's the natural thing to do though.
