public service announcement

Now I don't condone Ali Brosh's stance on spider murder. But I do agree with the sentiment of this illustration.

Warning: I'm going to be annoying and pedantically philosophical in just a second.

Spiders are not inherently any such thing as "scary." "Scary" is a meaning assigned to them by a scaredy pants human. It is a label. The scary is in your head, woman, not in the spider.

End of annoying bit. I enjoyed that way too much. I need a metaphorical cigarette now.

Go get a magnifying glass, Mwa. Remember that spiders drink blood with their mandibles of doom.

Look at one up close and come back with your pedantry then!

Also: tell it to the struggling fly.

I remain firm: the scary is most desperately in the spider.

I have a theory that people are (generally) either terrified of spiders or terrified of rats and mice. I'm fine with spiders...............just don't unleash any rats or mice on me!!

Me too, just the other way round. I like the cute little rodents :)

I used to be afraid of spiders until I went to the Victoria Bug Zoo. I learned a lot about their role on the planet. They are very important! I love them now, I do! I don't kill them anymore. I catch and release. :-)

Spiders are way less scary than people.

True. If a person was lurking behind my bed or running across my living room carpet at me, there is no way I'd be able to fit them under a cup and fling them out the door.

On the plus side, unless you're very unlucky, there is less chance that a person will crawl down your neck.

@morgor - Yeah, but what about spiders?

(I do love to be pedantic.)

@Jo - Mandibles of doom, eh? :-)
